Choosing A New Furnace

When choosing a furnace you should know about the different types on the market today to determine which system will work best for you based on your home's needs. Factors to consider include: heating requirements, ductwork, insulation, size of home, and budget.

Gas furnaces are currently a very cost effective way to heat your home because natural gas prices are low. Not only that, but high-efficiency natural gas furnaces are up to 97% efficient, making an upgrade to a new unit very cost-effective.

Types of Furnaces

Single Stage Furnaces

Considered the most basic style of furnace, the single-stage furnace is also one of the most common. This style of furnace has only two settings: on or off. It produces heat at full power until the thermostat reaches a certain temperature, and then kicks off. Though less expensive to install, single-stage furnaces are not the most efficient—especially for larger homes—and monthly energy costs can be higher than other, more efficient styles of furnaces.

Two-Stage Furnaces

Two-Stage furnaces are a bit more efficient than single-stage heat because it heats at two speeds. The lower speed heating runs more frequently, helping to maintain a more consistent temperature, and the higher speed only kicks on for extreme temperatures. Though they are a bit more expensive up front, two-stage furnaces are more efficient, quieter, and produce less carbon dioxide than their single-stage counterparts.

Variable (Multi) Speed Furnaces

Multi-speed furnaces (also known as variable speed or modulating furnaces) offer the most consistent and efficient heating of these three options. The heating runs continuously, with a fan motor that outputs different speeds as needed to keep your home at a consistent temperature. Because of this, variable speed furnaces offer better airflow circulation and can help improve air quality. This style of furnace is the most expensive up front, but tends to offer lower utility bills thanks to its improved efficiency.

Perhaps one of the largest advantages to running a forced air heating system powered by a furnace is that you can use the same ventilation system to cool your home. The ductwork can be utilized in the winter for heating and in the summer for cooling. You can also add on option units like air filters, purifiers and humidifiers to further improve your indoor air quality.
