Noisy Radiators: How Much Noise Is Normal?

BODEK Heating

If you live in an older home, the clicking of a radiator starting up can be a telltale sign that winter weather is here. But new or excessive radiator sounds can indicate a larger issue with your heating system, especially if you notice other issues alongside the noise.

When it comes to radiator heat, some noise is to be expected and even normal. If your radiator is clicking or creaking while it kicks on or off, for example, this is most likely nothing to worry about—just the sound of the metal pipes expanding or contracting as they heat up and cool down. If you notice a drastic change in the sound or its frequency, it could be a sign of another issue. But most of the time, these sounds are a normal occurrence.

Other sounds most likely indicate a problem, but luckily, many of the issues are easy to fix. Gurgling and running water sounds from a radiator are common signs of trapped air, and can usually be solved by bleeding your radiator once a year as part of your yearly maintenance. Other sounds, like hissing noises, may be a sign that your radiator needs a new air vent, another routine fix. If you're noticing sounds like banging, hissing, whistling, gurgling, or running water from the radiator itself, these are usually not signs of a dangerous issue—however, it's better to get them fixed sooner rather than later to keep your radiator running as efficiently as possible and prevent further issues down the line.

If your noisy radiator has begun making new, increasingly frequent, or unusual sounds, it may be a sign of a more urgent issue—especially if you notice other problems along with them. If your radiator is leaking, running unexpectedly hot, or feels cold in spots, it's a good idea to call a professional to assess the situation.
