Though winter isn't officially here yet, winter weather certainly is in the Southern Tier! If you haven't already, be sure to protect your pipes from freezing temperatures by taking precautionary measures against freezing temperatures.
1. Drain Outdoor Fixtures & Appliances
Drain all of your outdoor water fixtures or appliances—garden hoses, pools, hot tubs, sprinkler lines, and any other appliances that might hold standing water. Make sure pools and hot tubs are properly covered and hoses are disconnected and stored away for winter. Shut all your outdoor water valves completely and, if possible, shut off your outdoor water source for the season.
2. Insulate Exposed Pipes & Faucets
If you have any exposed pipes, it's a good idea to insulate them to help prevent freezing. This might include pipes that are outdoors or in an attic, basement, crawlspace, or other unheated area of your home. Outdoor faucets can also be insulated for additional protection. Using fiberglass or polyethylene pipe sleeves and wraps can be a budget-friendly but effective way to insulate pipes.
3. Keep Your Home Heated
Maintain a consistent warm temperature in your home—even while you're away. It might be tempting to lower or turn off the heat while you're on vacation for a lower heat bill, but trust us; it's worth paying a bit more for heat to prevent costly and damaging burst pipes in your home.
4. Drip Faucets During Severe Cold
Keep an eye on the weather—if it's looking like a harsh cold snap, keep your faucets dripping to help prevent frozen pipes. You can also open any cabinets below your kitchen or bathroom sinks to help keep the pipes a bit warmer.
5. Check Your Pipes & Water Heater
Make sure your plumbing is ready to take on the incoming cold with a quick inspection. Check your pipes for leaks and clogged drains, and ensure that your water heater is functioning correctly.
